چکیده

UNLABELLED Control of cessation of growth in developing organs has recently been proposed to be influenced by mechanical forces acting on the tissue due to its growth. In particular, it was proposed that stretching of the tissue leads to an increase in cell proliferation. Using the model system of the Drosophila wing imaginal disc, we directly stretch the tissue finding a significant increase in cell proliferation, thus confirming this hypothesis. In addition, we characterize the growth over the entire growth period of the wing disc finding a correlation between the apical cell area and cell proliferation rate. Determination of mechanical stress distribution in Drosophila wing discs using photoelasticity

Morphogenesis, the process by which all complex biological structures are formed, is driven by an intricate interplay between genes, growth, as well as intra- and intercellular forces. While the expression of different genes changes the mechanical properties and shapes of cells, growth exerts forces in response to which tissues, organs and more complex structures are shaped. This is exemplified...

Control of wing size and proportions by Drosophila myc.

Generation of an organ of appropriate size and shape requires mechanisms that coordinate growth and patterning, but how this is achieved is not understood. Here we examine the role of the growth regulator dMyc in this process during Drosophila wing imaginal disc development. We find that dMyc is expressed in a dynamic pattern that correlates with fate specification of different regions of the w...

Photo-elastic properties of the wing imaginal disc of Drosophila.

In the study of developmental biology, the physical properties and constraints of the developing tissues are of great importance. In spite of this, not much is known about the elastic properties of biologically relevant tissues that are studied in biology labs. Here, we characterize properties of the wing imaginal disc of Drosophila, which is a precursor organ intensely studied in the framework...

Differential Regulation of Cyclin E by Yorkie-Scalloped Signaling in Organ Development

Tissue integrity and homeostasis are accomplished through strict spatial and temporal regulation of cell growth and proliferation during development. Various signaling pathways have emerged as major growth regulators across metazoans; yet, how differential growth within a tissue is spatiotemporally coordinated remains largely unclear. Here, we report a role of a growth modulator Yorkie (Yki), t...

A global pattern of mechanical stress polarizes cell divisions and cell shape in the growing Drosophila wing disc.

Organismal development is under genetic control. Ultimately, mechanical forces shape embryos. If we want to understand the precise regulation of size and shape in animals, we must dissect how forces are distributed in developing tissues, and how they drive cell behavior to shape organs. This has not been addressed fully in the context of growing tissues. As cells grow and divide, they exert a p...
